Bhai Dooj comes right after Diwali, when the house is still full of leftover mithai and diya wax. Sisters do tilak and aarti, pray for their brothers' long life, and brothers bring a gift (usually picked up on the way home, let's be honest).
In many parts of India it goes by other names too: Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhai Tika in Nepal. The spirit is the same everywhere: a day just for siblings.
Here's a set of wishes you can send, and gift ideas for every kind of sibling situation.
Bhai Dooj wishes for brother
"Happy Bhai Dooj, bhaiya. You've protected me all my life. Today I pray someone up there protects you just as fiercely."
"Tilak on your forehead, mithai in your mouth, and a list of demands in my hand. Happy Bhai Dooj!"
"You're my first friend and my forever bodyguard. Happy Bhai Dooj."
"No matter how far you go, you'll always have a sister praying for you on this day."
"Happy Bhai Dooj to the brother who fights with me all year and then gets emotional on exactly one day."
"I don't need a gift. Okay, I do. But mostly I need you to stay healthy, happy and close."
Bhai Dooj wishes for sister
"Happy Bhai Dooj to the sister who's always been more of a mother, a friend and a manager than I deserve."
"Your tilak, your blessings and your scolding: I'd be lost without all three."
"You pray for my long life every year. The least I can do is make it a fun one for you. Happy Bhai Dooj."
"Thank you for always being on my side, even when I was clearly wrong."
"Gift is coming, I promise. It's just stuck in traffic with my good intentions."
Bhai Dooj wishes for a sibling far away
"Diwali without you was quiet. Bhai Dooj without you is quieter. Come home soon."
"I kept a thali ready anyway. Consider your tilak sent by WhatsApp."
"Distance can stop the train tickets. It can't stop the prayers."
"Same moon, two cities, one silly sibling bond. Happy Bhai Dooj."
Bhai Dooj wishes in Hinglish
"Bhai, tu jitna bhi irritate kare, teri behen hamesha tere saath hai. Happy Bhai Dooj!"
"Tilak lagwa le, mithai kha le, aur gift de de. Simple hai. Happy Bhai Dooj!"
"Behen, tu na hoti toh ghar mein kaun mujhe daantta? Happy Bhai Dooj."
"Bachpan ki ladaiyaan, Mummy ki daant, aur ek dusre ko bachana. Yahi hai apna rishta."
Bhai Dooj wishes in Hindi
"भाई दूज के इस पावन अवसर पर मेरी यही प्रार्थना है कि आप हमेशा खुश और स्वस्थ रहें।"
"तिलक का ये रंग हमारे रिश्ते जैसा ही गहरा रहे। हैप्पी भाई दूज।"
"दूर रहकर भी तुम मेरे सबसे करीब हो। भाई दूज की ढेर सारी शुभकामनाएँ।"
Bhai Dooj gift ideas for sister
Brothers, here's your cheat sheet.
If you're seeing her in person
- Something she's mentioned recently. Scroll back through your chats. She's dropped hints.
- A day out, your treat. Shopping, a movie, a meal at the place she likes. You hold the bags.
- Her favourite sweets from a specific shop, not the box you grabbed at the petrol pump.
- A skincare or self-care set in a brand she already uses. Ask her best friend if you're not sure.
- Jewellery with meaning, like a small pendant with her initial.
If she's in another city
- A UPI transfer, but with a note. "Buy the thing you keep adding to cart and removing." Money is a fine gift when it comes with thought.
- A food delivery of her comfort food on the day.
- A courier from home: Mummy's snacks, a framed family photo, something from your shared room.
- A digital surprise she can open on the day (more below).

Sisters sometimes give back too, and brothers love it more than they admit.
- His favourite snacks in bulk. Brothers are simple creatures.
- A good wallet, belt or perfume if he's just started working.
- Something for his hobby: cricket gear, a gaming accessory, a book.
- A letter. Brothers almost never get letters. Watch him pretend it's no big deal.
A Bhai Dooj surprise for the sibling who can't come home
Diwali travel is chaos. Trains are full, flights are expensive, and leave gets cancelled. If your sibling can't make it home this year, a surprise page is a way to give them more than a "Happy Bhai Dooj" sticker.
Open When… works especially well for siblings. You write a set of sealed envelopes they open at the right moments:
- Open when you miss home
- Open when Mummy scolds you on the phone
- Open when you need money (put a UPI note inside)
- Open when you're homesick at a festival
- Open on your birthday (locked until that date)
You can add family photos, lock some envelopes until later dates, and they can write back to you at the end. It costs ₹29, takes about 15 minutes, and opens straight from WhatsApp.
"Open when you miss home: Mummy made your favourite gajar ka halwa today and put a bowl aside 'just in case'. Papa pretended not to notice. We all miss you. Come home soon, the TV remote is lonely."
If you made an Ek Dhaaga page for Rakhi earlier in the year, an Open When… bundle makes a nice second chapter.
Make the tilak moment special on a video call
If you can't be together, you can still do the ritual:
- Keep a thali ready on your side: roli, rice, a diya, mithai.
- Ask your sibling to sit facing the camera, maybe with a parent beside them if they're at home.
- Do the tilak gesture and aarti on camera while they put a tilak on themselves.
- Share a sweet together, same time, different cities.
- Send the gift link or UPI right after.
It's not the same as being there, but it's much closer than a text.
A small note on the traditions
Bhai Dooj customs vary a lot by region and family. Some sisters fast until the tilak; some families have the brother eat a meal at the sister's home; some focus on the aarti and mithai. Follow whatever your family does, and use these wishes and ideas around it.
This Bhai Dooj, say a little more
Send one of these wishes, add a memory only the two of you share, and make the gift a little more personal than usual. If your sibling is far away this year, put your bachpan photos and letters into Open When… and send them something to open on the day, and on the days after.
